What is Concrete Flatwork?
Typically, concrete flatwork refers to a wide array of flat surface concrete paving jobs. Common projects include concrete driveways, concrete sidewalks and walkways, concrete patios, concrete courtyards, and parking lots. At Lubbock TX Concrete Contractors, we refer to concrete flatwork as any job on a horizontal plane that involves large or unique surface paving not covered in our other services. Flatwork includes parking lot, pool deck, large surface jobs and more.
Poured Concrete, Concrete Slabs, Concrete Pavers
Concrete flatwork can involve many different methods. These methods include poured concrete, concrete slabs, and concrete pavers. We offer concrete construction using any of those methods, based on customer preference.
Poured concrete involves on-site pouring using forms and molds. This concrete mix consists of sand, gravel, cement, and water. Often, rebar is added to the mold before pouring to increase support and strength. Rebar is steel bars that act as tension devices to increase tensile strength of the concrete.
Concrete slabs can either be pre-cast or poured on-site. A pre-cast concrete slab is poured, molded, and cured off-site before being transported to the construction site. Expansion joints and control joints are often used in conjunction with poured concrete and slabs to allow better expansion, contraction, and movement, thus reducing stresses.
Concrete pavers are small pre-cast concrete stones in all different shapes and sizes that are interlocked with each other upon installation. Poured concrete and concrete slabs may be better for foot traffic, since they can be finished with a non-slip texture, to avoid accidents when wet. Concrete pavers have a smoother finish that can be slippery when wet. However, concrete pavers typically last longer and have more durability.
