Protect Your New Concrete Sidewalk with Concrete Mesh

Need extra strength in your new concrete walkway for heavy loads? We can add wire mesh before pouring concrete into its frame or mold. This is a similar process to that of reinforcing a concrete driveway for heavy vehicles. When you have a concrete path that sees or will see traffic with heavy loads, the surface may crack or damage easily without reinforcement. Mesh can increase structural integrity and bridge small imperfections in the subgrade. These steps prevent deterioration of the concrete under heavy traffic.

How Do We Pour Concrete Sidewalks?

We pour a smooth, durable and low maintenance concrete sidewalk. We always use a high quality concrete mix with just the right proportions for a strong and durable product. We offer sidewalk paving and installation using poured concrete, concrete slab, and concrete paver methods. We pour concrete-based sidewalks using the method below:

  1. We use utility locator tools to locate and mark any underground pipes and cables. This prevents any damage to these utilities during excavation.
  2. We excavate around 8 inches, depending on what concrete thickness you desire, in preparation for sidewalk installation.
  3. We level the excavated area and remove any tree roots to prevent future interference with the concrete. This helps us prevent cracks due to tree roots in your walkway.
  4. We form the edges of the walkway with boards to create a mold frame for the concrete.
  5. We cover the ground of the framed area with a gravel base to help the concrete settle more effectively.
  6. We add any reinforcing mesh to the frame for extra strength, if requested by the customer.
  7. We mix our concrete using a combination of an aggregate (sand or gravel), cement, and water. Normally, we use a 0.4 water to cement ratio, which forms strong and durable concrete. The lower the ratio, the stiffer the concrete.
  8. We pour the concrete into the mold frame from the lowest point to the highest point.
  9. We use vibrations to remove any air pockets in the concrete.
  10. We smooth and flatten the wet concrete surface with a bull float to create an aesthetic finish. This process also removes any excess concrete.
  11. We finish the edges to create a pleasing and smooth look, while we texture the surface for a non-slip experience. Any concrete stamping is performed at this stage.
  12. We let the freshly poured concrete rest and begin the curing process. Concrete can dry within 24-48 hours, however curing can take a month or more. Your new sidewalk or walkway is safe to walk on once fully dried, usually within 48 hours.

Why We Use Expansion and Control Joints in Concrete Sidewalks and Concrete Walkways

We don't want cracks to appear in your sidewalk; that's why we use control joints and expansion joints when installing them. These joints take stress off of the concrete and allow it to expand, contract, and move without damaging itself. The goal of the control joint is to allow the slab to crack when it expands and contracts in a straight line along the designated joint area. Expansion joints are similar. Expansion joints allow concrete slabs to move without overstressing at its edges. Together, these joints keep your walkway looking pristine and crack-free.
